3 Dantians:
Upper Dantian: Head, area above the chest
Middle Dantian: Belly
Lower Dantian: Lower Abdomen
They represent 3 states: From bottom to top, solid substance -> power -> non-substsance (idea)
Simialr to 精->气->神
Breathing in Practical Method is actually no active breathing.
Master Chen Zhonghua talked about that breath from his father lying down in the last days of his life.
He observed that the lung rose up, and then it went down while the abdomen rose up. The air went back and forth. The bottom line was that it was not like a normal breathing. The frequency of the exchange became longer and longer.
Eventually, the last breath came out. There was some blue liquid at the bottom at the end. This was the burst of the original qi that was given to you at birth by your parents. If at the end, it comes out, one is said to have died in a natural death, and it is very rare.
Breathing from the heaven. Heaven is outside of our body.
e.g. For a partially filled balloon, if you squeeze the air on one side of the balloon, it will go to the other side of the balloon.
Fajin exercise with White Crane Spreads Its Wings. Stretch from the side, no popping of shoulders, no movement on the arms.
For my Cloud Hands, I need to engage the gears (elbow, shoulder, kua). Each does its own thing.
My shoulder was following my elbow at first.
There was no enough activity in the kua. I moved from my ribcage. I should move from the kua, and engage the shoulder and the kua.
水功 (慢) vs 火功 (快)
20 趟拳是水功 。慢慢改变身体,不用用力太猛。
用力练一路是火功。
动肘到拳肩线,但拳肩线不能改变方向和位置,只能变长。
Water vs Fire
Water is slow and steady.
Fire is rapid and fluctuating.
Doing 20 yilus is like water. No need to use a lot of power, just let yilu transform your body slowly and gradually.
Training yilu with power is like fire.
Open chest exercise: Lock the middle of the chest, stretch the two shoulders around. Lock the two shoulders, and push the middle of the chest out.
Breakthrough: The front hand finds the rearelbow on a straight line. The key is that the striaght line remains the same initial position and direction, except it becomes longer at the end. If we look at the first fists, they only travel on the same straight line throughout the move.
Now I need to the things in between the front hand and rear elbow to line up, e.g. the two shouldlers, through rotation and stretching.
Exercise: Open/split the armpit. The rear portion needs to crash into a wall behind my back, so that it will slide downwards.
The crashing part is what causes a change in direction. The power comes from this horizontal force changed into a vertical force. The vertical force in turns powers the horizontal force. From the horizontal perspective, there is no movement for the vertical movement.\
2nd Count of the circle: The armpit needs to split. The upper arm can't go down with the torso. The hand does not come back.
When I want to not move my hand, it actually comes back. When it does not move, I actually think that it goes out, but the camera shows that it does not move. I actually felt a stretch when I thought the hand went out.
Fajin with Six Sealing Four Closing
Exercise 1:
Rubber between the hand and the foot. Bend down first. Lock the upper body. Push the kua forward towards the rubber. The focus of this exercise is to train the kua, the use of power in the kua to extend the rubber. This is converting a horizontal movement to a vertical one. We want to train a great range of kua movement. Gradually, increase the tension of the rubber.
The above exercise trains a vertical movement. This is a precursor to the movement needed to do Six Sealing Four Closing.
Exercise 2:
Push the kua up and out towards the line between the two hands to cause the front hand to go forward.
We can do it in 3 stages:
Today's exercise is to practice 别开. Get stuck with the opponent at the top, use the kua to rotate the waist. The energy through the middle of the chest must get to the hand.
Set up my hands on something that is totally locked.
标准 is 认可。
Yilu is the first standard when we first learn taiji.
He talked about the story of the storyteller from the native people.
The story words went with the rhythm of music. If they are wrong, they can't continue.

Lock one side and move the other
Exercise: Put my forearm on the opponent's chest. Lock the hand, move the elbow. The elbow needs to move along the line of the upper arm. This is the tangent to the circle. The forearm has a stretch.
Trained power moves using Yilu from first move.
Block Touch Coat: Right hand block
When the person appears to be big and strong, do a bigger circle.
When the person appears to be small and weak, do a smaller circle, more like a direct hit.
We have to train enough to put ourselves in the position of power.
肩和膝管上下。
肘管上身。
胸中间管中线。
胯管左右。
功夫 - 指哪打哪。要一个部位动,就只有这一个部位动。
功夫 - 对方预测不到的。超出了自然。
两种难:
Positive Circle:
In with Elbow: Lock the rear kua.
Out with Hand: Lock the front kua.
Lock the rear kua allows the front kua to grind (碾).
To rotate: 碾, then 搓,顺着出去.
We need to pass it on. We can't worry about who can really do it or not.
Passing it on means the receiver remembers what you said, and can repeat the saying.
Story Telling
We use stories to pass on information.
Plains of Abraham: This battle was won by British army. From here, Britian eventually gain control of North America when French Revolution took place, and France gave up North America.
Wuji is there is nothing within an area. You draw a circle to mark an area. Wuji is having a restriction.
1+4 = 2+3 = 5 + 0 = 1.1 + 3.9 Wuji is saything that the sum needs to be 5.
Taiji is to say from 0 to 5.
To say 10, it's because there are 5 on each side.
Yi (intent) is based on a real experience. Yi is not plain imagination without real experience.
We want the core to control the movements, so we can see the limbs but not the dantian itself. Training: Kick with heel as an exercise.
Lever: one side goes down, but it actually needs to move, so the pivot keeps moving backward within the rod.
Book exercise: Not allowing the book to fall down with your hand and opponent's hand on it. One person pushs and pulls, the opponent matches the action with the elbow, shoulder, kua, feet.
Leader in 3-count circle
Six Sealing Four Closing: While the two knees are going up and down, they are restricted within a cylinder.
I don't know how many Master Chen Zhonghua has said not to move the knee.
Although I am well aware of the requirement, and tried to implement during the yilu form.
I saw today on the online class that even when he was very causually demonstrating an action, which involves bending the knee, his knee was not moving!!!
I realized that the image that I throught I saw before was actually made up.
First step in the first move:
After the right turn, my left hand is on the opponent's elbow not moving, while my right hand holds the opponent's wrist. Lock my outside, shrink the distance between my right elbow and right kua. This is to fali 发力.
3-count positive circle:
变硬 - 拉长定住
抓对方的手腕 - 拇指与中指扣着对方的手腕
拦擦衣 - 第三动 - 右胯要顶出到左边来 - 是一个动作让三个部位动起来。
Fixed two dots are static power. Add one more dot between the two is dynamic power. As long as you can stretch this third dot against the fixed two dots, you have power, e.g.
Master Chen explained the difference in the following: 开步、合步、跟步、开脚。
Size of the two gears determines the direction of the resulting power.
Dao - Everything exists as it is. There is no right or wrong. The sequence matters. An individual piece is fine as it is. If you disrupt the flow (the sequence), it becomes problematic.
Elbow (in), Kua (rotate), Hand,(out). It is wrong when the sequence is messed up.
3 hats:
松沉 - Vertical plum line, the line has no power itself. The line is a relationship. Taiji needs the relationship to be virtual.
Between the sun and earth, there is gravity, which is the relationship. It is real, but you can't touch it.
You have learning something once you can paraphrase it.
If you can see it, you have learned it.
If you can really see it, what you see does not change.
To be a student, always collect data/information. Over time, patterns will be formed from such information.
Figure 8 positive circle - A big positive circle in the front, and a small negative circle at the back
Figure 8 negative circle - A small positive circle in the front, and a big negative circle at the back
Use the kua to draw the circle.
All joints between the two ends must be open. Only the hand against the opponent, and the foot against the floor compress.
At the beginning, when opening one joint, it forces a compression to the next joint. We must continue to open each of them until it reaches the end.
When doing fajin, only go to 80% extension.
The kua goes up to the inside towards the elbow.
Elbow, shoulder, kua are 1/3, 1/3, 1/3.
First half of the circle, push into the front foot, but the foot does not move.
Compass: one needle does not move at all, the 2nd needle is pinned to the paper but to the table. When moving the compass, the 2nd needle will move around the first needle dragging the paper. The 2nd needle moves on a track (specifically around the first needle).
Those are the 3 kinds of not moving:
First move of yilu: Vertical rotation inside a cylinder
Fist drape over body: I need to use the kua. Too much action at the top. Stretch the left kua, and deng the left leg.
Lean with back: Shoulder and torso needs to separate. The torso needs to slide under. Ka-deng (sound).
Use two high-back chairs to lock my shoulders and lock the arms, and let the torso drop.

Three ways of talking about our actions:
Going down - It needs to be led by the bottom.
Going left - It needs to be led by the left side
Going right - It needs to be led by the right side.
Going up - It needs to be led by the top.
Every move is a pull.
Exercise:
To peel the other person off, my movement must be perpendicular to the opponent's movement.
Exercise 1:
Tonight through zoom at the North American Practical Method Training Camp 2021, Master Chen Zhonghua was teaching people push hands. The two people engaged with one hugging the other. I experienced knowing the move that Master Chen would want in that situation. I practiced it on my own thinking about how I would do it. It was the step-back-and-go-down move. Master Chen later instructed the students the same way. When I actually face an opponent, I may not be able to do it, but at least the thought was the same, and it would guide my training on this move.
Master Chen's comment: Makes one wonder why people can’t see it, can’t understand it and can’t do it.
I believe I can see it because there is the space in between the kuas that I can go into. When I get to the normal stuck position, there is such option available to me. However, if I can't move the kua in a certain way, that option of going down is simply not available, and I wouldn't be able to make the association of the words "going down" to it. This is a matter of 火候.

Story Time
In Phoenix, there was a person who was named Scott, aged 32, a lawyer, and had learned for 4 years from a famous Chen Village master. He came to visit a morning training session at North Mountain during the Master Chen Zhongua's workshop weekend. After the training session was done, he asked to try with Master Chen. Master Chen bounced Scott 3 times. Ping Wei was so excited to see, and was sure that Scott would come to learn. After a while, Scott didn't come to ask, it turned out that his thought was that Master Chen had proved to Scott that Scott's own teacher from Chen Village must have been even better since that teacher was more famous. Scott decided to learn more diliegently from this teacher.
Turning Flower from the Bottom of the Sea
Exercise 1:
Fingers/Hand do not move. The two elbows squeeze from the side into the center line towards the middle finger tip. The two kuas also open and squeeze towards the finger tip.
Exercise 2:
Two hands up after double downard squeeze, and before Punch to the Ground. Keep the two hands high up. Lock the hands, and knees. Let the kuas drop vertically towards the ground. This must create a stretch internally.
Kua physically can only go up and down.
Knee physically can only go sideways.
We need to produce the splitting energys all the time.

Taiji's cycle is 3: Yin, Yang, and rooted in each other
3D is created by spinning a plane. 3D is created by an action.
"Three" represents a loop, means to repeat things endlessly.
There is really only two main things in Chinese martical arts: horizontal and vertical.
We need to determine horizontal and vertical, one of them is more dominant.
However, you need both of them to be present to say that there is either horizontal or vertical. We need to both to make the distinction.
We need to determine the opponent's primary move, and use the opposite to deal with it.
The vertical motion will cause a very weird feeling to the opponent when done correctly. It is like the opponent will fall into the hole. In our normal life, we try to escape from the vertical motion, and only do the horizontal motion, which becomes much more familar to us. With Practical Method, we train to have the vertical motion, and also to get use to it, so that we are not afraid of it ourselves.
Yao 摇 - horizontal
Bai 摆 - vertical

Pattern of practice
We focus on training one part (X). When we get that X right, Y may become wrong. We fix Y, X may become wrong again. We go and back forth until both X and Y are correct. Then we add Z on top of them.
3 parts: Fix two parts, move one part.
In the exercise of rotating horizontal, we must fix the middle (dantian). How to fix the dantian?
Lock the right elbow-shoulder-kua triangle, but place it horizontally.
Rotate to the right horizontally using the kuas.
First make the line between the right elbow and left foot. The left foot is supported by the floor.
Later make the line between the right elbow and left knee, but we need to keep the knee up (i.e. the left knee cannot point to the floor).
As we rotate to the right, the right elbow and left knee must continue to expand/stretch.
Implosion
Fist of Hitting and Lifting
The flip from one side to another needs to happen because of torso going down. More precisely, the two shoulder-to-kua axes go up and down against the central non-moving axis.
There are two sides on the forearm as well.
In general, it is the idea of rubber that causes moving in another area. There has to be power conversion all the time.
Fist of Lifting and Blocking 搬拦肘
Common mistake in push hands:
There are 2 kinds of movements:
Periodically, we have to revisit all we know about the taiji, and don't believe what we have. Use different ways to test and verify it. In order to make progress, we have to believe that we are right. In order to break the particiular level, we have to believe that we are wrong. The theory is empty and never wrong. Whenever we materialize it, we make progress, but at the same time, we are wrong. It is like, we have to make something, and destroy it, make it again, and endlessly repeat this cycle, and refine our taiji. If we don't materialize it, it is not real.
Something has to come out.
Go over the threshold 过关: hand and shoulder
Get to the special spot 窍: tip of the elbow, inner spot of kua to come out, back of the knee to find alignment, spot at the bottom of the neck
Master Chen explained the switching of the kuas again, how they are like two credit cards touching each other in a T configuration. We need to create a gap and then do the switch.
More on switching on the kua, the T needs to switch from one side to the other.
Another illusion is with the two hands with the middle finger tips touching each other with one palm facing inward, and one hand facing outward. The switch is achieved by rotating at the finger tip touching point ending with each palm facing the opposite direction.
If you have a solid revolving door, you shine light on it to create a shadow on the wall on the other side. The width of the shadow will change as the door revolves.
We need to make the switch within an enclosed space. The kuas must be like ball bearings. Marking a dot on the surface of each kua, the distance between the two dots can change as the kuas rotates.
To actually move the kua, we need to create a small gap at the kua first. It's like two strong magnets stuck to each other. We need to pull them apart (detach them) a little bit first before we can change the way they attach to each other. Another way is to change add another perspective, which is like locking the inside, and moving the outside.
Exercise 1: Use the kua to push the hand out. Shoulder, kua and elbow are one piece. The hand stretches against the shoulder. This is a very practical push hand move.
Exercise 2: Elbow Strike (the elbow has to come out)
Exercise 3: Double Push Hands: Pull the opponent in, Front foot goes forward, rear foot follows. Two hands go out from the dantian with a trajectory. We use the back foot to push.
Train with the rear foot at the corner, and a big enough stance to lock the body (especially upper body).
Taiji is only realized with speed.
To connect between the shoulder and the hand, use rotation to make it happen.
Ultimately we want to create power, we use movement, time and accuracy to do so.
The true not moving only happens when there is rotation. In outer space, we need to use gyroscope to fix things.
We want to go through (3-dimensional). We have been doing "go over" (1-dimensional).
Generate one experience, and permeate it through all other postures.
Exercise 1: Use the left hand to grab the right wrist, stretch the right fingers. This is not just a demonstration, it is the method to train. People often ask Master Chen how to train, in fact, he just showed us. We only need to do it 60 times in each session. Doing it 60 times means to not use too much power, or using the right amount such that you can do it 60 times. When you use the left hand to grab the right, squeeze the armpit to lock the left hand, so that the left hand itself does not move. In order to stretch, we must lock something.
Exercise 2: Six Sealing Four Closing
Rub the front armpit, the left shoulder need to stretch backwards to cause the energy to squeeze towards the right chest. The body action and energy are also opposite to each other.
Exercise 3: Daligong 大力功
Exercise 4: Squat down, feet shoulder width, stretch hand forward as we squat down. Stretch from dantian. Stand up, dantian push against the feet, energy goes back to dantian, in with elbow to bring it back to dantian.
Exercise 5: Positive Circle
Front kua and front heel must be a rod. Rear kua and rear heel must be a rod. First half of the circle, rotate the front rod. Second half of the circle, rotate the rear rod.
Small Frame vs Big Frame (Focus on small movements vs Focus on large movements so things flow)
Old Frame vs New Frame (Start from the inside causing the outside to move vs Start from the outside causing the inside to move) Bottom line is the inside has to move.

When the body action is correct, the energy is wrong.
When the energy is correct, the body action is wrong.
Body action and energy must have separation of yin and yang.
At the end, we need to use rotational movement to shoot out straight line energy.
Normally, body action and energy tend to go together. Even if we begin with rotation, it very easily follows the energy path, and does not rotate anymore.
If we press the shoulder into the elbow, and the elbow is on the table, the energy will shoot towards the finger. As we push the shoulder more, the finger may shoot up and deviate from going outward. We need to control the finger navigation. This is like controlling the rotational action.
Maintain two lines (This exercise came from Twisting the towel.)
What is success? It's to never give up.
Why would one give up? He had a change of heart.
中文两字词语是阴阳的。信念 - 信往外,念往内。
Each person has many reasons why he/she chooses to do something or not to do something. They are all valid reasons to them. No one is unique is this regard.
When you want to quit, you will always be able to find a very compelling reason.
When you don't quit, you simply don't see any reason to do so.
We see what we want to see. If we want a reason, there will be a reason.
Master Chen mentioned a story about a student in Edmonton, who was very dedicated to learn Practical Method for 7 years. One day, she decided to pause for 6 weeks to go to Korea to attend someone's wedding. She saw that she must go because a friend from church wanted to go back to Korea to have a wedding, and if she did not go, the friend wouldn't have anyone from Canada attending that wedding.
Master Chen foresaw that she wouldn't be able to come back after the trip, and advised her not to go. The student didn't understand and so she went on her trip. Unfortunately, she got sick in Korea, and it was so serious that she couldn't train anymore after coming back to Edmonton. She insisted on coming to class, but she could only sit on the side to listen, and couldn't participate. 4 more years of sitting on the side, and she stopped coming eventually. The Edmonton studio moved to a new location, and unfortunately, Practical Method moved on, and she was not able to keep pace and continue.
During the class, there was another student who mentioned that she finally found Practical Method, and she believed that it was the real taiji. She believed that she wasted time in learning the previous thing. Master Chen pointed out that saying "time was wasted" meant that she would likely find something else that was "better" in the future, and would resent spending time in Practical Method. This is a pattern that will likely repeat itself.
It is very normal for people to give up, to continue the existing habit, to stay trapped in the same cycle.
What is the difference between a son and a step-son?
A son has a natural relationship with you that exists not by his or your choice. He can't sever it even if he wants to. 先天 is something pre-existing/pre-determined, and not something you choose to have or not to have. A parent will always be able to forgive his son. The son won't think about his parent intentionally hurting him.
To be extraordinatry, it is to break the norm, be able to do something that cannot be achieved by a common person.
On Mar 12, 2021, Master Chen was instructing on an exercise, in which, I put up my left forearm in front of and parallel to my chest. I need to push the elbow downwards with a pivot in the middle of my forearm, with the load on the hand. The desired outcome requires me to create an independent setup of a lever, and then press down on one side of the lever (elbow). This is separation of yin and yang because the downward force is independent of the lever setup. The lever setup cannot break or change its integrity when the downward force is applied. The outcome of the lever action is predetermined by the setup. The downward force when applied in a specific way simply makes it happen. If the downward force is not applied correctly or the lever setup breaks down, the desired outcome will not happen.
If the forearm itself is considered as 1 (wuji), the downward force being the trigger creates the lever, which is 3 (taiji). There is actually no lever until there is a pivot, one side goes up, and the other side goes down.
The difficulty in this exercise is that there is only one forearm (by locking the wrist and stretching the finger, they become part of the forearm), the pivot is not realized until there is movement on the forearm, and the pivot only exists within the forearm.
How to do it then?
Aim/push the downward energy into the dot, only then the pivot can be realized, and only then the energy can actually pass through to the other side.
Being able to do this allows me to relate other drills together, such as pushing the shoulder into the elbow that is sitting on the table, the hands being on the track when the torso goes down during double downward squeeze. There was also another demonstration that Master Chen has done before using a staff with the opponent standing on the other side holding the staff. He could twist the staff in a way that controls the location of the non-moving dot where the power meets.
Put the elbow on the table.
Shoulders goes down to the elbow.
Elbow can't go down because of the table, and it will go to the hand.
Torso only goes down.
The line between the hand and the shoulder must be fixed. This means the triangle among hand, elbow, and shoulder must be fixed.
Practical Method Positive Circle is 3 dimensional. We can see a circle in top view, length view, width view.
One Knee Up One Knee Down Exercise:
Shuttle 穿梭
During training (when we are not yet successful), we use extra effort and focus to get it. It is tiring.
Once you are successful, the body gets used to it and will not be tiring anymore. The hair has been combed. The effort has gone through a filter.
Exercise: Use rotation to move a rod (front arm) through a tube.
This lesson is about staying on topic, and then categorization within a topic.
There are only 3 types of movements in Practical Method:
Key things, e.g.
We must remember the key things even if we don't understand it.
When we see "Fill in the blanks", even if we don't know the answer, we must fill in the key things. It won't be wrong overall.
There is a gap in between. It's can be too large or too small. Just right, it must have that "ke-cha".
We must remain a student as long as possible.
Even when we are instructors, in term sof time spent, we must spend more time as a student learning than as a teacher teaching.
open (开) | <- style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium;">|, To open is to parellel open (increase the distance between two plates). What we can actually do in the joint is very small. Big joint, max 3 inches. Small joint, max 1 mm.->
<- style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium;">Applying this concept of open in our actions, let's take fetch water as an example, the opening of the front should be like this. There are two plates at the end of the front hand and rear shoulder. We have to create a parallel opening at the front kua.->
I was training to go down without pushing forward. I used a chair with a high back. There are felts underneath each leg, so they wouldn't stretch the wood floor. They also provided some amount of friction. I noticed that just by going down, the chair would be passively squeezed forward. I made sure that my arms were not moving. Every time I finished going down, I had to adjust my feet to move closer to the chair. As the chair was squeezed forward, one of its legs got caught at the air vent cover, and couldn't move forward. The result was that the chair rotated around the stuck leg as the chair was further squeezed forward before. I was thrown out in response to the rotation. The feeling was indeed quite weird. Note that the movement causing myself to be thrown was not created by the air vent cover. All it did was maintaining not moving, and making one of the legs to get stuck. This was real separation of yin and yang.
