Notes for 私课1-雅加达2015 video

在这视频中,陈老师讲及五弓,他只用了三弓对方便倒地。他用开车比喻太极拳。

Notes:

0:18 Master Chen talked about 5 bows. In the demonstration, he showed 3 bows: right hand to left elbow, right knee to left shoulder, head to left knee.  The first 2 bows locked up the opponent, the third caused a rotation.

0:18 陈老师讲了五弓。在演示中,他展示了三把弓:右手到左肘,右膝盖到左肩,头到左膝盖。前两把弓锁住了对手,第三把弓启动了旋转。

1:05 In the future, we used small actions when engaged with the opponent.

4.52 Pay attention to the position of Master Chen's arms relative to his chest, they didn't change. The waist caused the chest along with the arms to move together as one piece.  If this fixed part is a car, the car itself does not change, you just drive it.

6:17 We can see clearly that the student was moving his arms, the relative position to his chest was changed. This is our common issue.

6:52 Master Chen instructed to use multiple sequential actions tto complete a rotation. If one segment of action is not sufficent, we lock it there and make sure that we don't retreat, set up again and continue. We repeat the sequence until the job is done. If we can‘t fix the top, it is like we don't tie up the opponent tight enough, the opponent will be able to go away.

7:22 Master Chen demonstrated how to borrow the opponent's power.  When the opponent powered up, he didn't power up himself, he followed the opponent's action and led him to the ground instead.

7:42 Master Chen followed the opponent's path of action, and added one (a little more) on that path, causing the opponent to fall forward.

Personal Note: A bow itself curves, but we work with it like an invisible straight line between the ends of the bow, much like the open triangle concept.

0:05 How to produce a rod in the body in relation to Step Back to Whirl Arms? From Fist Under Elbow, just get to the postition where the right hand comes up from under the left elbow, and is now extended (not fully extended) and can be locked in space.

1:35 The rod that we want to focus is between the right hand and the right shoulder. The right elbow with the right hand and right shoulder form a triangle (an upside-down coat hanger). With the rod not moving, the elbow goes underneath the rod.

We are just stretching around it.  A ball centered on a rod, the ball may appear to spin around the rod, but the rod has not displacement. Other examples include a lolly pop and a rattle drum.

5:54 There is no waving of the hands freely.  However, on the surface, it may appear like that because of the combinations of things that are done at the same time to produce a wholistic move.

There are two kinds of actions regarding a rod:
1) Telescoping Action
2) Rotisserie Action

These two actions can each be carried out using the follwoing two methods:

b)Fix the two ends, move the middle.

2) 旋转

这两种动作可以各自以
a)定住中间动两头
b)定住两头动中间
做出来。

陈老师详细讲解海底翻花、搬拦捶、煞腰压肘和裹身鞭这四个动作的要诀。

Notes:

0.15 海底翻花、搬拦捶、煞腰压肘和裹身鞭全属于属于同一类动作。这四个动作有个共通点,即它们都具有旋转的中轴,从而使附着在轴上的东西会因旋转被带动起来,如螺旋桨和拨浪鼓器一样。

2:08 实用方法运动的另一种主要类型(与所讨论的这4种运动相反)就像是将螺旋钻从外部移动导致内部向下钻取。这是定住中间走两头。

2:38 回到这四个动作,我们定住两头走中间。海底翻花中,身体从后脚跟到头顶有一根棍。手看起来好像在动,但刚巧是相反的。我们必须找到一个可以定住手的位置,用内在的棍来使手改变位置。右臂从上到下,左臂从下到上。

陈老师详细指出一路前十三式在跟对方交手时,在那个地方应怎样用力。大家也可用这知识到其他一路动作。练了一路一段时间的同学绝对不要做过。

Notes:

0:50 Buddha's Warrior Attendant Pounds Mortar
1) The two hands anchor on the opponent, i.e. not moving. The power is at the elbow pulling against the anchor points. At first, just do elbow-in. Adding a rotation increases the distance. At the end, through the same move, the incoming power hits a wall and is returned to throw the opponent backwards.
2) Anchor on the right foot. Left foot kick can aim at the opponent's ankle or knee. The front kick is matched by the elbow-ins going backwards to create a stretch.
3) After the right foot comes forward, there is a split between the right hand and one of the feet. The left hand was expected to have a hold on or in contact with the opponent. The right hand goes up from the opponent's groin area.
4) For the pound mortar part, our right hand locks the opponent's right wrist, our left hand blocks the opponent's right elbow. Use our dantian (not just our arm) to squeeze our right hand down to our left hand.
5) We integrate these power points into the form training to allow us to have a focus more directly on applications.

1) 双手紧握着对方不动。力在肘,收肘。首先,只收肘。加上旋转,距离便曾加。最后,以同样的动作,顺着让来力撞墙,然后反弹,把对方往后扔。

3:10 Block Touching Coat
1) After both hands are open, the right hand holds on to the opponent, the power is at the elbow to do elbowin. At the same time, the right heel goes out.
2) After you get back to half horse stance, right hand and left foot stretch against each other with the right shoulder-kua line as the middle.

3:10 拦擦衣
1)双手张开后,右手紧握着对方,力在肘,收肘。同时,右脚跟相对地铲出。
2)回到半马步后,右手和左脚以右肩胯线为中间相互伸展。

3:46 Single Whip
1) At the exchange of hands part, use the whole body to squeeze each hand out.
2) Lock the right hand, use the dantian as the handle, open the right kua to create a whip at the right hand.
3) Throw the left hand out against right foot.

1) The power is at the elbows against the fists. Make sure that the dantian does not move in the same direction as the elbows.

4:24 White Crane Spreads its Wings
1) Use power to split the right hand against the right foot at the right shoulder.
2) Use power to split the right hand and the left hand when we spread our wings. The split must be supported by the right foot on the ground, while the left foot is light to allow easy direction change of the split of the wings.

4:24 白鹤亮翅
1)用力在右肩分开右手跟右脚。
2)亮翅时用力分开左手和右手。分开由右脚支撑,而左脚是轻的,以便改变亮翅的方向。

5:09 Brush the knee in Oblique Stance
1) Press down the right foot to propel the left heel out.
2) Once we reach half horse stance, at the brush knee part,  the left arm is like knife against the left thigh (chopping board) to take out the space in between.

5:13 Initial Closing
1) The power is at the elbows against the fists while the dantian and the front kua have to go out against the incoming elbows.

2)踢左脚跟时,后背不动。

5:45 Walk Obliquely in Twist Steps
1) Use the right hand to grab the opponent's hand. Put our right elbow against the opponent's elbow. Do not power with the right arm itself. Once the right arm is tied up with the opponent hand and locked on to ourselves, it does not move anymore, use the dantian to effect the rotation. This is an example of indirect power.
2) At the point where two hands are out, as if they touch the opponent, lock them, use the kua to push and squeeze out the hands.
3) Fetch water: Lock the whole body, use the front kua to split.
4) With the left arm straight and locked, use our back side (what is behind the front knee) to pump/shoot towards to the left finger tips.

5:45 斜行拗步
1)用右手抓住对方的手。用右肘抵住对方的肘。不用右臂使劲。当右臂跟对方的手于自己的身体合在一起时,右臂就不要再动了,以丹田旋转。这是间接力的例子。

6:56 Second Closing
1) Rotate the left shoulder to change the direction of the left hand. The left hand and the right foot from a stick.
2) Left armpit goes down while the left kua comes up to split the line between the left hand and right foot.

7:12 Wade Forward in Twist Steps
1) Near the end of this move, standing on the right foot, two elbows and the two kua scome into the dantian as if everything joins.  Be very small.
2) Then everything splits open. Be very big.

7:19 The Fist of Covering Hand
1) Both elbows come in on the right half horse stance. Turn to the left to go to left half horse stance.
2) Put the fists into position. Use dantian to propel the right fist forward. There is a split between the right hand and the right foot.

陈老师用活步双正圈和六封四闭的上步讲了实用拳法步法的要求与要诀。又谈了丹田作为中枢的功能。力往下沉是怎样做的呢?

Notes:

0.25 Turning Flower out of the Bottom of the Sea, Fist of Lifting and Blocking, Sink the Waist to Press the Elbow, and the Whip Wrapping around the Body all belong to the same category of movements. These 4 movements share the fact that they all have a core/rod that rotates causing the things attached to the core to go around, like a propellor or a rattle drum.

1:50 The other main type of Practical Method movement (opposite to these 4 movements in discussion) is like having an auger being moved from the outside causing the inside to drill down. This is locking the inside and moving the outside.

2:38 Back to about these 4 movements, we lock the outside, move the inside. The hands in Turning Flower out of the Bottom of the Sea may look like that they are moving, but that is the exact opposite. We have to find a position that we can lock the hands, and use the inside (e.g. waist) to cause the hands to move.

3:33 For Fist of Lifting and Blocking, while the fists go to the left, waist actually turns to the right. The arms need to adjust/adapt to the movement to allow the energy to be transmitted to the fists. There is no structure change to the arm itself, much like how a whip can allow the energy to go to the tip as one flicks the whip at the handle.

5:53 Turning Flower out of the Bottom of the Sea: There is a vertical axis in the middle. Energy is split from the dantian to go to the foot and to the head, i.e. the head can't go down during this move. With that fixed axis, there is also a stretch wrapping around the axis to cause the right arm to go from top to bottom, and the left arm to go from bottom to top.

7:09 The Whip Wrapping around the Body: We lock the arms at certain position that is not fully open. The power comes from the dantian, radiating out to the fist. The elbows have to come in, while the fists have to go out.

8:24 If we imagine have two gears engaged with each other, and the two gears are rotating. One type of movement is from the core (inside) going outside, the other type is from the outside going into the core (inside). The 4 movements in this video belong to the former type.

Notes:

0:04 - 2;47  Master Chen was emphasizing on separation of yin and yang.  Whether it was the hand going out or the elbow coming in, his body never moved. There were clearly moving and non-moving parts.

3:00 What we train are top-bottom separation and left-right separation. When we add them together, we have "silk reeling"

3:37 Top-botom separation: In the demostration, Master Chen’s torso did not move, only his leg moved. In general, top-bottom separation is top moving and bottom not moving, or top not moving and the bottom moving.

3:55 Left-right separation: In the demostration, Master Chen’s torso did not move, only his right hand moved. In general, left-right separation is left moving and right not moving, or left not-moving and right moving.

4:05 By the time we can successfully do it, it does not look like taiji (the kind of taiji people typically perceives it as) anymore.

Notes:

0:27 Two things cannot move together. The common mistake is that we use our hands to pull the opponent, but at the same time, the upper body also moves in the same direction as the hands.

0:36 The opponent was pushing in Master Chen's stomach, Master Chen would not have power if his stomach was pushed by the opponent to go backward. If the stomach did not move, the opponent energy had to travel somewhere. In this case, it went Master Chen's hands.

1:06 If we are able to not move ourselves when the opponent pushes into us, we will need to add an action somewhere else onto the opponent. If that action meets resistance, it must rotate, otherwise, it is simply meeting the opponent's power head-on.

1:26 Master Chen had three points/energies acting at the same: his left hand going up, his right hand going down, and his front kua going forward.

1:34 Three splitting energies: The three points of contacts were the opponent's right hand touching Master Chen's left upper arm, Master Chen's right elbow touch the opponent's right shoulder, Master Chen's right knee  touching the opponent's right knee. These three points caught and locked up the opponent. They all work synchronously with the non-moving front kua to cause a rotation.

1:50 This was a mirrored version of the action at 1:34.

2:10 Master Chen locked the middle of his chest as the non-moving point. He stretched his left hand out and over to the opponent's back to cause a rotation against his non-moving point. He also did a right elbow in. This was like the second action in Brush Knee of the form.

3:13 Master Chen caught the opponent with left hand, right upper arm and his left knee. Master Chen's left elbow went towards the ground, right hand went out, and left foot went out. They cause a rotation against his non-moving left kua.

3:46 Master Chen's left and right hand made one, his right hand and right knee made two, the direction in which his waist made three. He used the first two to catch the opponent, and used the third to break it.

4:13 Exercise: The partner pushes into your chest. Make sure that your chest does not move. Stretch the hands/arms against the chest to cause the opponent to slide move. It is important to have the separation of the moving and non-moving components.

5:49 Don't do adjustments in the circle. Break it down into 3 segments. Each segment is made of one action, but the first action takes one part (elbow), the second action takes two parts (elbow is locked to the waist, when the waist moves, it carries the elbow to a new position while the hand still points at the original direction), the third action takes 3 parts (a stretch with the rear foot causes the hand to go out and the waist to turn).

Notes:

1:30 抛出去:力沿着一条路线,一点一点通过,传递到手上。每通过一点,那一点就不动。

4:00 力传递得越好,动作越少。

6:22 胳膊永远走向着自己。收肘向丹田。

7:45 掤劲不能变化。变大变小都是两个球碰在一起旋转做出来的。

9:30 变化中的不变,也可以说不动的动。它是要通过旋转来完成的。

13:20 三分力:腰永远往前走,两只手做不同的动作(两个不同的方向)。

17:10 僵就是对方推一个地方的时候,其他地方也同时被推。如果我们能分开,对方推一个地方,其他地方还可以做自己的。
