What is learning?

Learning is following someone's instructions even if you don't want to.

Learning is allowing changes to be made.

Learning is trying to do something that you couldn't do today.

Learning is going from not knowing to knowing.

Learning is repeating the exact same thing over and over again, and making it better.

Learning is not doing something only in a way you want to.

Master Chen Zhonghua Online Lesson on Jan. 28, 2021

Two power training exercises on BWAPM

  1. Touch the opponents arm, jerk with the elbow-in, if we get stuck, turn with waist.
  2. Next move. Place the left foot on opponent's knee and grab the opponent's arm, small elbow-in and small kick to the knee to jerk the opponent.

Rubber Cord Exercise:
  1. Tie the rubber cord on the wall.
  2. Make the rubber cord very strong so we cannot pull any longer using only the arms.  The rubber cord has to be pulled so strongly that it can pull your whole body towards the wall if you let go a little bit.
  3. Figure out a different way to extend the rubber cord further.
The rubber cord exercise is to induce the idea that we need to go over threshold that normally is impossible to break. In push hands, we must start our move in a stuck position with the opponent, that somehow we do something that gives a shock to the opponent.

Fist movements need to come out of the mouth.

Master Chen Zhonghua Online Lesson Jan. 27, 2021

  1. Put yourself between two walls, and place your hand on one wall, and the back on the other wall. Leave some space from the walls. Use the dantian to push towards the line between the hand and the back.
  2. Kick right heel. Use rubber band to pull the two hands. We need to train the dantian to make sure when the hands go out, the body does not move.
  3. My correction: Push the dantian out against the head and foot line (Triangle). There is also a slanted line from the front foot to the rear shoulder. When the head gets to the final destination, it must stop.  When the dantian pushes out, the rest of the body structure must be maintained. The power should not leak out anywhere in the structure except at the designated spot.
  4. My knees were moving when I issued power.
  5. Speed and Sharpness of the knife: If the knife is a bit dull, you can increase the speed to cut. If the speed is slow, increasing the sharpness of the knife will still be able to cut.
  6. We have to change the way we train after some period of time.

Master Chen Zhonghua Online Lesson on Jan. 26, 2021

Separation of yin and yang is to split into 2.  However, we are one person, we can't become two independent persons as we want. We must go through a specific set of training (PM) to split into two.

Bones are responsible for hard, and tendons are responsible for soft.

Master Chen Zhonghua Online Lesson on Jan 25, 2021

Master Chen Zhonghua talked about the fire schedule (火候). We have to be ready to receive the information at the right time. If we miss the opportunity, we will never get it.

Against the bigger/stronger opponent, we must hold our ground, and look for the dot in the opponent. If that dot is moved, they will have no power anymore.

Against the smaller/weaker opponent, we will not fear, and we must obtain absolute dominance. Basically, on the touch, the opponent already knows that they have lost.

Peng is the energy that you are strong enough to withstand the opponent's power, and hold your ground.

The eight technique only exists from the start point of having the peng energy.

Peng is also the technique that push forwards and hold the opponent in front.

Lu is the technique that pulls the opponent backward.

Ji is the technique that pulls yourself forward toward the opponent to take up any space created.

Peng and Ji one after another create the worm action.

An is the technique that separates the opponent from you, and it can go up, down or forward.

Cai is the technique that plucks something off the opponent without allowing the opponent to move.

Lie is the technique to split.

Zhou is not the elbow, it is a technique to create a warp.

Kao is the technique that slams a body part into the opponent.

Master Chen Zhonghua's Online Lesson on Jan 22, 2021

Yilu Correction:

  • The dantian should stick out, while the chest should cave in. It looks like an S.
  • Tie shoulders to the kuas.
  • Initiate action from the kuas.
  • BWAPM: Throw the right kua from down under and up to so the right knee touches the right elbow.

"Only segmented moves are smooth, smooth moves are not smooth."

2015 video

https://www.zhenbudong.cn/archives/89584

Notes:

Reference Implementation

ReferenceImplementation

Master Chen Zhonghua only teaches a reference implementation, which represents an example of how the principle is applied.  There are many parts that need to be examined, explored and learned.  We must focus our effort on learning all the parts of the reference implementation, how they form part of a system, how each part functions, and the role each part plays, what the effect when all the parts work together, etc. We have to go over this reference implementation over and over again, because there is always something we miss previously.

The common mistake is that we ask questions that are not related to the reference implementation, e.g. we ask about "what if", "what about". When we have heard about the reference implementation, naturally, we believe that we immediately know about it, and are made aware of it.  Most of the time after a while, we barely remember that we have heard it. Until we have spent the effort in copying it, trying to re-create it ourselves, we will never master even this reference implementation, needless to say any other implementation that we need to create given other conditions and variables. During the process of replicating the reference implementation, we learn the detailed requirements and our own short-comings. We work on overcoming such short-comings, and we learn many things that are not necessarily told to us directly, but we learn it regardless through this method.  Transmission has taken place in this manner.

The reference implementation can also be called the model answer. It is not the only correct anfoswer. Any answer that complies with the same principle is a correct answer.  When we master the reference implementation, we have learned all the required building blocks, and we can then take these building blocks, and re-combine them in a way that may look different from the reference implementation, yet the requirements that are embedded in the reference implementation still exist in the re-combined product.

As an exmaple, Master Chen teaches that we must make our arm dead, e.g. its structure does not change at all regardless what we do next. He may show us to rotate the waist backward to drive the arm forward. We must replicate this ourselves through repeated training. Later, we may discover that there are other ways to drive the arm, such as opening the armpit.  However, in my experience, there is no need to ask about the armpit during the particular teaching moment, we should simply focus on replicating what is shown at the time. Example questions could be:

  1. Could you please show us again?
  2. What should we pay attention to when we look at you?
In summary, we follow what is shown to us 100% and leave any thinking aside until we can replicate it.

At the eye of a turnado

I was doing some stepping training last night. I stepped forward, and pretended to bounce myself off a wall to another direction, and repeated that with the other foot, and kept going. I ended up spinning around. The faster I did it, the faster the spin. Normally, I would feel dizzy, but I didn't. I was like inside the eye of a turnado, I saw things just going around me. When I wanted to slow down to stop, I still didn't feel dizzy, I let the energy keep spinning around, but I stopped moving the feet. Eventually, the spinning stopped. The feeling overall was quite weird.

Lever

Master Chen Zhonghua talked about Practical Method's internal power coming from the ability to have a lever in any action. There are certain actions that are relatively easy to recognize the formation of a lever. For others, such as a punch, they are not so easily conceivable.  However, we must retentlessly look for a resolution.

A lever is a simple machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge, or fulcrum. A rotation can be viewed as a continuous lever.

As shown in the diagram above, there are 3 classes of lever as commonly defined. Taiji movements are made up of them, the following table only illustrates one example in the form for each class.

Class 1 撬

The fulcrum is placed between the load and the effort, while the effort and the load are in the same direction, e.g. A tidder todder, a balance scale, a pair of scissors.

In Second Closing, we use the right foot to cause the left arm to rotate around the left shoulder-kua axis to the left.

Class 2 铡

The load is placed between the fulcrum and the effort, while the effort and the load are in the opposite direction, e.g. A wheel barrel, a nut cracker, a paper trimmer.

In Brush the Knee in Oblique Stance, we press down the left shoulder to the left kua, this is much like the paper tripper action.

Class 3 夹

The effort is placed between the fulcrum and the load, while the effort and the load are in the opposite direction, e.g. A stapler, a hockey stick, a pair of tongs.

In Buddha's Warrior Attendant Pound Mortar, after the right hand goes to the right, we use the right elbow to lead and bring the arm to the centre.

NOTE: If we ignore the placement of the load and effort, the action of the lever itself can look exactly the same between class 2 and class 3.
We often can see only a partial system, we must figure out a way to see the other part.

If a missile is fired, it has the ability to travel 6000 miles, but it lands on a target that is only 1000 miles away. Its destuctive power is more at a closer distance, the equal opposite force that allows it to travel 6000 miles must be there somewhere.

Getting this idea will allow us to look at our actions differently.  See the diagrams at http://practicalmethod.com/2012/10/yin-yang-split-online-video-trailer/. It includes a lever that has an arm that is infinitely small, which essentially creates a split in a straight line. If we only look at one side of the split, it can be just like a straight punch.

Open our mind, and we may even recognize lever across dimensions, such as time. ThreeLeverStoolThreeLeggedStool

The stool with 3 cross legs have 3 levers in it. When sitting on it, the weight on top is converted from the top to the bottom, as well as from one side to the other. This is only achieved because of the non-moving dot in the middle. Think of a pin-pole camera, the smaller the hole, the sharper the inverted image. Similarly, the more precise the non-moving dot, the better the conversion. The three levers are depending on one another to provide the non-moving dot. Without the non-moving dot, there is no lever. This is yang rooted in yin, and yin rooted in yang. No one leg is more important than the other, it's all or nothing. The system must exist as a whole.

For the stool with straight legs, no conversion happens. The weight sitting on the top is directly supported by the ground. Three legs leaning on each other can stay up together, while 3 independent legs can't stand on their own.

Lu, Cai, Lie

Master Chen demonstrated Lu, Cai, and Lie with in-with-elbow in “Shake the Pole”. These three belong to the same group.

Lu 捋 – You grab the opponent’s arm, pull him in, and throw him onto the other side. There is no severance of the arm in this case.
Cai 採 – You grab the opponent’s arm, and pull on it quickly to sever it at the shoulder. This is like plucking a flower.
Lie 挒- You grab the opponent’s arm, and pull him in. He hits your body, which provides a stop to the incoming force. This also allows the arm to be severed at the shoulder.

Fajin

Examples of fajin:
  1. We stretch, then we add another stretch, another stretch. When we can’t take it anymore, it explodes.
  2. If we have a full jar of marbles, we shove one more marble into it than it can take, the jar breaks.

2019 video

https://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/91980

Notes:

Half Horse Stance is the main stance in Practical Method. There is a reference line between the two feet. In this Chinese video, Master Chen Zhonghua demonstrated that the rear foot should be placed perpendicular to the reference line. This rule is very crucial in training the lower half of the body. It looks easy, but many students would relax this rule unconsciously when they focus on opening of the kua, and the direction of the knee. In fact, only if you uphold this rule, we can start adjusting the other body parts because foot is rested on the ground, which is not part of our body, and is the only real non-moving part.

https://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/20301

Notes:

Kelvin Ho's 2020 Review and 2021 Plan

2020 was a very different year. The world suffered from covid-19, everyone had to experience a lot of changes. Master Chen Zhonghua used to hold workshops all over the world non-stop throughout the year, which was inevitably halted, but Practical Method seeked to adapt and developed an online teaching platform with the latest technology. From a set of random classes to regularly scheduled classes by the beginning of 2021, the participating students made rapid progress and benefited a lot from them. This was largely due to being able to have more timely access to Master Chen Zhonghua and his instructors for guidance. The pandemic created an opportunity to allow Practical Method to soar to a higher level in the new year.

2020 Review

2021 Plan

  • Personal training goals:
    • 3000 yilus
    • 500 cannon fists
    • 500 times of swords
    • 500 times of broadsword
    • Focus on strengthen training
    • Improve push hand skills
  • Organize a local push hands workshop or course.
  • Continue to teach weekly online classes, and expand to other course subjects in 2021.

Friday Night Practice on Jan 8, 2021

  • After Punch to the Groin, don't move the fist and shoulder, only move the elbow. The elbow needs to be like scooping ice-cream.That's all the arm does. The waist turns 90 degrees to the left to make the overall scooping action bigger. The common mistake is that we move the arm without locking the fist.
  • White Ape Presents Fruit: The fist should now point at 45 degrees. After the scooping, we must be able to stand on the left leg steadily before present the fruit. We push the chest in and right shoulder down to open the right armpit to squeeze the right fist out. We must not move the fist itself. The right elbow can only go into the line between the right fist and right shoulder.
  • To get to the Small Change Palms Three Times, the right foot leaps out horizontally while the right arm is still at 45 degrees.. These two directions allow us to catch/hit the opponent in between. our structure must be solid.
  • Third Cloud Hands: We walk horizontally (not 45 degrees forward), with the right foot crossing in front.
  • High Pat on Horse: We start at 45 degrees (let's say facing Northwest) with double negative downward squeeze hand out, then negative circle elbow in. Switch to feet by turning left to face Southwest. Do elbow-in to squeeze the right hand out. The right elbow stretches to the left against both feet, hold the elbow in place, stretch the right hand out. The right hand must stretch the right elbow, and continues to stretch against the right kua. Lock that, and open the right kua to further stretch against the right hand and the left knee, both of which should not move. Stretch so much that right shoulder-kua axis can be locked in place. Release the left foot, so that it can spin around the right shoulder-kua axis.  This is related to switching as in this Chinese video: https://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/126632
  • At this point, the right arm and the chest are at 135 degrees. After spinning the body to the right, and it will get to a point where it becomes one piece with the right arm, at which time, they can be tied together and move together.

20200825 video

https://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/118071

Notes:

https://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/20165

Notes:

Stretch

To create a stick, we, we need to stretch.

  • Think of pushing down the middle point, B, of a triangle with the two other points, A and C. locked. The stretch is between A and C, and the stick is formed between A and C.

To rotate, we also need to stretch.

  • Think of a non-moving rod. A rubber band is tied to it, and stretched outward away from the rod. When it can't stretch any further, a small force tangential to the stretch will cause the stretched rubber band to go around the rod.
In both cases, there are both restrictions and the attempts to break the restriction.

In the first case, A and C are restricted from moving, while B is forced to break the A and C apart along the A-C line.

In the second case, the rod is restricted from moving, while the rubber band is pulled and stretched away from the rod. If the rubber band is ever loose, the little nudge cannot cause the rotation.
