Notes for Go around the centre video
http://practicalmethod.com/2014/12/go-around-the-centre-online-video-trailer/
We have heard so much about the non-moving dot, and why we need to have it. Do you know how to use it? In this video, Master Chen demonstrated numerous examples on how the opponent fell out by going around the dot.
See you online at 10 am ET on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at http://practicalmethod.com/2014/12/go-around-the-centre-online-video-trailer/.
Notes:
Welcome everyone to this video! I have provided the following guided reference. Please feel free to ask any questions related to the video.
0:27 Master Chen pushed a bit into the student to find out where the centre was.
0:55 Master Chen pushed into the right arm of the student to catch the centre and made sure that it did not move. While maintaining that, Master Chen added another direction that was about 90 degrees to the original direction where he used to lock the opponent's centre. The result was that the student was rotated around that centre located roughly from the top of the head down through his chest. Note that he took several steps, because Master Chen repeated the same action as many times as the number of steps taken. We can not do full rotations, we can only one segment at a time to build up the larger rotation. This is an application example of what we mentioned last week at http://practicalmethod.com/2015/01/joints-as-anchor-points-online-video-trailer/.
1:36 Repeat the same procedure to test out the non-moving dot in the student. This was again found to be in the middle of the chest.
1:53 The non-moving dot was protected. Master Chen's energy went over that dot. Eventually, the dot was forced to move backwards indirectly.
2:03 The dot was at top of the student's right elbow. Master Chen stretched his own body over the rod created between the student's right hand and right elbow.
2:33 This 2nd demo on the same student was similar but not exactly the same. The stretch created was bigger, hence the arc as well. The difference was caused by the amount of resistence exerted by the student. Master Chen's stretch had to match that.
3:00 We can either find or create the dot. To create is to draw a response out of the opponent. The actions we perform to create the dot must be useful (meaning be able to affect the opponent). If it is not useful, the opponent does not need to respond.
3:20 Master Chen stretched himself around the back of the opponent to go over. The dot was at the slight right side of the the student's dantian.
4:32 It was very important to understand the meaning of Master Chen's words, and not to change his words to suite our own understanding.
5:59 Principle vs Technique: Aim at the nose is an example to illustrate the idea of aim. We can aim at different targets at different times. The importance is about the aim. We can't change the focus to the specific target, such as nose. In this example, aim is the principle. When the focus is on the nose, doing this or that to the target is a technique.
Another example is about 5 dollars being money and a chair not being money. We couldn't change the nature of the topic. When we talk about going over, there is a fixed dot, and there is an action going over. The action itself can be big or small, and the fixed dot could be big or small, but regardless, the statement of saying going over a dot remains true. The situation can in practice be affected by many factors, but we have to see what is common about it despiie the distractions.
8:37 Master Chen's demonstrated how he got in without presenting any threat to the opponent, and thta is key in not causing any movement or change to the non-moving dot.
10:00 We don't let the opponent what we really want to do until the last minute. If the opponent knows too early, they will react, go away, block you, or do something that will prevent us from doing what we want.
11:20 In Taiji, we must make the opponent's abilities insubstantial. It does not matter how big or small they are, it is irrelevant, they will lose regardless.

Notes:

Notes:

Notes for Joints as anchor points video
http://practicalmethod.com/2015/01/joints-as-anchor-points-online-video-trailer/
In this video, Master Chen showed us the concept of stretching through the joints, what it took to stretch from end to end in the body, what the impact was by adding a point in space. He introduced the concept of double helix, and what it could do to the opponent. He integrated all of these into our form practice.
See you at 10 am ET on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at Joints as anchor points.
Notes:
Welcome everyone to this video! I have provided the following guided reference. Please feel free to ask any questions related to the video.
0:18 Master Chen showed using the shoulder as one of the anchor points to create a stretch. The other anchor point was at the left side back. As he did an elbow-in, the elbow was stretched against the shoulder, which in turn was stretched against the left side back.
1:03 A rubber band could have a stretch when one end was anchored off something that was not moving. The other end just needed to be pulled away from the anchor point. However, our bodies are not like that. There are joints in between end points. We must anchor the joints in order to create a stretch as Master Chen demonstrated with the rubber band stretched around corners.
2:16 Each section between two joints is stretched, so overall, from end-to-end, it is also stretched.
3:33 Master Chen's right elbow and right knee formed the first stretch. His right hand and right elbow formed the 2nd stretch. This formed the first line.
He described a 2nd line which was invisible, and the two lines formed a double helix. Note that the two lines must cross each other to produce the effect.
3:54 Master Chen added a third one. You can see in this case that the outcome has more power. You can have at most 9 of such lines. The opponent will be tangled among them.
4:49 Master Chen's right hand and right elbow are two dots, and there was one more in the space that he pointed at. The relationshiop among the three dots did not change as he rotated.
5:13 The student's right wrist, right shoulder, left kua, and another point between his feet.
5:30 We have to train our eyes first [to see what was going on], and eventually our bodies will follow.
I can say that this statement is so true. This video gives us very good practice. If you cannot yet see them, I encourage you to watch again and again until you see those points Master Chen mentioned. It will be like you don't know what is going on, you can't match the description with the action. One day, all of a sudden, you see that is exactly as described.
7:42 Master Chen was holding the student's wrists, he created a third point in the middle of his upper back. He then stretched his right fingers, which were outside of the original 3 points. This is adding "one" to that struture without breaking that structure.
8:25 Master Chen demonstrated an application with Initial Closing. He got the student's arm, which formed a line. He pulled in his two elbows, the front kua didn't move back with the elbows, and created another line poking at the student's right armpit. These two line met roughly at the student's armpit.
9:57 Notice that Master Chen did not move his right knee, and his right kua opened.
11:30 Master Chen taught how to apply the idea of pegging, which was locking/anchoring the joints, in our form. When we couldn't do it, we were moving.
12:34 Master Chen demonstrated how he became longer section by section, and therefore longer overall.
14:15 Eventually, we must be supported in 8 directions We find in our bodies, one point stretched against another point. While maintaining that stretch, add another stretch somewhere else. Keep adding as much as possible.
14:43 This stretching exercise was exactly like the demonstration using the rubber band. After the two end points aree fixed, add another point in the middle and stretch against the original two end poitns.
15:26 Now try to apply this idea into your first 13 to anchor one point at a time, and keep adding.

2014 video
http://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/15759

Notes:

Notes:

Notes for Changing Direction in Positive Circle video
http://practicalmethod.com/2014/02/changing-direction-in-positive-circle-online-video-trailer/
In this week's third episode of our Positive Circle series, Master Chen covers how we create splitting of energy in the three counts of a positive circle, and how switching we learned last week is used to change direction.
See you at 10 am ET on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at http://practicalmethod.com/2014/02/changing-direction-in-positive-circle-online-video-trailer/.
Notes:
Welcome everyone to this video! I have provided the following guided reference. Please feel free to ask any questions related to the video.
As a fresher, the three counts of the positive circles are:
1) In with elbow
2) Turn with waist
3) Out with hand
We can also say:
1) In with elbow
2) Turn with kua
3) Out with finger
1:00 For the 2nd count of the right positive circle, we stretch the right heel against the right elbow by pushing into the right heel.
For the 3rd count of the right positive circle, we stretch the left heel against the right hand by pushing into the left heel.
1:25 Transitioning from the 2nd count of the positive circle to the 3rd count requires the turning of the joint. This allows us to change direction. In the future, that switching will be very small. The smaller the better.
3:25 At the beginning, our movements will be very coarse, so much that we are tossing our body a lot. Eventually, it will be more fine and our body won't toss anymore.
3:40 We must use exaggerated movements at the beginning to understand how the energy should be flowing. At the end, even when externally it does not appear to be like that, the way the energy flows remains the same.
4:01 In Chen Taiji, no one should be able to find your direction because it is in every direction. For a rotating object, regardless of how you touch it, it feels like that it is coming at you.
4:13 Exercise 1: Train splitting without doing the entire positive circle. Later, we incorporate it into the positive circle.
6:15 Exercise 2: Train opening of the kua.
9:00 Master Chen explained the difference between dantian rotation vs dantian wiggling. Dantian rotation requires a true centre that does not move. Only by achieving dantian rotation, you can realize the true power of the dantian.
12:30 How do we rotate (or do a circle) without being poked through our dantian and getting pinned there? We need to break a circle into two halves. We need to lock one side and move the other for half of the circle, and then switch to lock the opposite side and move the other. There is no full circle visually, but the opponent would feel the complete circle. (As I understsand, it's the energy that keeps going forward without ever going backward. Here is an article I have written previously on this topic: S-curve is really the circle.
15:10 Master Chen demonstrated the idea of locking one side and moving the other with his dantian in this section of the video. Please watch repeatedly until you can actually see it.

Notes for 不动:转150407 video
http://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/11667
Video:
Notes:
2:21 We must feel your opponent's size of power and must not move within that size. We must move something outside of that size to line up.

Notes for Switching in the Positive Circle video
http://practicalmethod.com/2014/06/switching-in-the-positive-circle-online-video-trailer/
In this video, Master Chen covered the 3 main axes in the body, and how we could switch among them without tossing in the positive circle, and the analogy of a lever with different pivots. We discussed about the shoulder last week at Shoulder Movements in Positive Circle, we will continue this week regarding switching with the lower half of the body. See you at 10 am ET on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at http://practicalmethod.com/2014/06/switching-in-the-positive-circle-online-video-trailer/.
Notes:
1:00 We have 3 vertical lines in our body. The one in the middle from top of head down is called central equilibrium, but that is not functional. The other two functional lines are from each of the shoulders down.
2:00 We need to learn to switch between the two functional axes by moving the pivot to those axes. When the power arm of a lever is short, it has a long reach and the action is fast, but you need more strength to move the lever. When the power arm is long, it has a short reach and the action is slow, but it takes less effort to move the lever. By learning the three major positions of the pivot on a lever, we can eventually put the pivot anywhere on the lever. Not moving means establishing the pivot on a lever. The vertical axis allows a horizontal rotation.
3:15 Master Chen demonstrated how to apply this concept into the positive circle. In the first half of the positive circle, we use the front shoulder-to-kua line as the axis. The longer lever arm is from the shoulder-to-kua line to the rear foot. in the 2nd half of the positive circle, we switch to use the back should-to-kua line as the axis. This switching is done without any body movement or tossing. Do not learn to fight too early, as it takes a long time to get the taiji actions in us.
4:16 If we can’t reach the opponent, we must use our feet to move ourselves closer to the opponent. Note how Master Chen moved himself forward. The dang and two knees must form a triangle like a coat hanger that is solid in its shape. All movements must come from the feet (from knee down). The top must not move, like the chassis of a car, and only the wheels spin to carry the chassis around. Therefore, no leaning, no reach, no identation at the kua or waist.
5:00 Here is another demonstration of the switching of the axes in positive circle.
5:45 Here is another demonstration of movement the entire structure forward. Note the separation between the bottom and top. When the feet move, the top stays erect and not moving. The top does not follow the movement of the bottom.
6:20 The theory of 1/3: When measured against the floor, front kua to middle of front foot is 1/3, front kua to rear kua is the second 1/3, and rear kua to the middle of rear foot is the last 1/3.
6:40 When Master Chen demonstrated pull the opponent, he switched from his right shoulder-to-kua axis to his left shoulder-to-kua axis. Note that his torso stayed inside a cylindrical enclosure with no tossing.
7;05 One of the things Master Chen has repeatedly said in many occasions that we needed to change our habits.
7:40 Master Chen used the analogy of typing a keyboard to show the concept of separation (he used to call it division of labour too). Each finger is designated to type only certain keys on a keyword, there is no crossing or jumping around. The same key is always pressed by the same finger. The phrase 各家自扫门前雪 just came to my mind. Every finger contributes to typing certain letters, a word, a sentence and then a paragraph will come along. The typing will then be efficient. In our body, if we want to increase the distance between the front hand and the rear foot, each body part in between will have its own function to contribute to that end goal.
8:23 Lastly, Master Chen demonstrated a switching exercise. Pressing down one heel caused the other heel to go up, and at all times, the dantian does not move at all. This resembled a light switch or a tidder-todder (seesaw).

Notes:

http://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/10917

Notes:

http://www.shiyongquanfa.cn/archives/93640

Notes:
